ABSTRACT
The article discusses the consequence of the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. U.S. President-elect Barack Obama promises to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months from his inauguration. The surge of U.S. troops in 2008 allegedly helped stabilize situation in Iraq, enforce counter-insurgency against the Al Qaeda and Sunni insurgent groups, and break the power of Shiite militias. The article concludes that ethnic and religious divisions in Iraq must be addressed to have peace regardless of the presence or the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
