This exploratory-descriptive study was held in a psychiatric in-patient institution in the north of Paraná State/Brazil in 2005. The purposes were: sensitize the nursing team for humanized care to patients with mental disorder. Twenty-one (21) nursing technicians and twenty-five (25) nursing assistants participated. Data were collected by workshops. Group dynamics were grounded by theoretical background on human communication and interpersonal relationship. It was verified that professionals perceive patients with mental disorder as human beings who need to be rendered care in their wholeness; on the other hand, workshops enabled a reflection on the delivered care and awakened their critical sense on the professional practice, bringing about care remeaning.
