ABSTRACT
The article reports on the decline in small-business hiring in Nevada in 2008, based on the SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard. There was a 3% decline in the average staff size in the state despite a 3.5% increase in small-business work force. Scorecard author Michael Alter attributes the difficulty encountered by small businesses in Nevada to the decline in the housing market. He adds that a slowdown in construction and hospitality will have consequences for the small-firm sector.
