ABSTRACT
Recent oceanographic investigations, whose aim is to review the bathymetry of the Côte d'Ivoire continental shelf by conducting technical investigations (digital ultrasonic sounders, GPS navigation), allows us to release a new bathymetric map with improved accuracy along the coastline. The new bathymetry reveals several morphological structures off Abidjan at the 100 m isobath and off Tabou at isobath 70 m. These structures extend west to east approximately 20 km. The direction of the structures is N 70°. Those depressions are tectonic basins created during opening of the equatorial Atlantic. The structural characteristic of these basins combines with the dynamic transverse fault trending 60° to 70° north related to the opening of the Côte d'Ivoire transform margin. Several sea-bottom currents have prevented sedimentation. The shelf edge presents some new geomorphological aspects. These are linked to the bathymetric profile, extension of the continental shelf, and types of slopes.
