Trans woman, former police brutality victim, killed in Memphis

The article reports that transgender woman Duanna Johnson, who was a former victim of police brutality, was murdered in North Memphis, Tennessee on November 9, 2008. According to Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese, the Tennessee Equality Project offered training to employees of the Memphis Police Department on how to be responsive on to the needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. It notes that the hate crimes law of the state does not specifically cover hate crimes based on gender identity.
