The article reports that Africa will be a major target for Western mobile operators over the next few years as they look to expand beyond their highly penetrated home markets. Gartner says mobile data growth is expected to be higher in the Middle East and Africa than in any other region through 2011 although in many African countries that will be from an extremely low base. Analysys Mason states that 27 new operators launched in Africa between 2005 and the end of 2007, and 80 new mobile licences were awarded in the continent over the same period.
