ABSTRACT
The article discusses research conducted by Vadim Gladyshev and colleagues at the University of Nebraska on a ciliate called Euplotes crassus. It was found that in the ciliate the codon UGA may encode two amino acids: cysteine or selenocysteine. Depending upon its location within the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) strand and the presence and exposure of a specific sequence near the end of the mRNA molecule, this codon could be read in both ways within the same gene.
