The article discusses research conducted by Yujiro Hayashi and his team at the Tokyo University of Science on the cheapest, most efficient route by which to make the influenza drug Tamiflu. Hayashi's methodology utilizes inexpensive reagents and only nine reactions. This process uses diphenylprolinol silyl ether, an organocatalyst that doesn't involve toxic metals.
