ABSTRACT
Best provides (1) an outline of the historical scientific context of historical social research, describes (2) the establishment of this research area in Cologne, distinguishes (3) the concept of historical social research from related areas of research and partial disciplines, such as social history, structural history, and historical social science, and sketches (4) the justification context for theory-oriented and quantifying historical social research. Best sums up by suggesting that quantifying historical social research is a scientific concept that does not aspire to the stating of nomologic laws of a "Newtonian" type, but rather that it is guided by "theories of medium range" and "statistical explanations."
