ABSTRACT
The article presents an account of the experiences of James Neugass, a U.S. volunteer ambulance driver during the Spanish Civil War from 1936-1939. He was a promising 32-year-old poet and novelist who joined thousands of other young Americans who traveled to Spain to help the nation's duly elected Republican government. He served as an ambulance driver during the crucial battles for the city of Teruel.
