The article presents a study which aims to identify the psychological, experiential or demographic characteristics that shape the executive's belief that they have the ability to achieve strategic change. A surprising finding was that personality was a much stronger predictor of perceived discretion than experience or demographics. In other words, who you are rather than what you have learnt shapes the managers' views of the range of actions available to them.
