ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the issues that confront the use of Thiazolidinediones for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It states that several studies show that the drug increases the risk of myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death. It highlights the randomized controlled trials conducted by Loke and colleagues which established the association of the drug to bone loss. It also comments that regulatory agencies such as Health Canada and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug based on short-term outcomes which overlooked its potential risks.
