ABSTRACT
This article reports on a proposal from the New Zealand government to cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Kyoto Protocol. The cuts would result in a gas tax for farmers and ranchers because their herds heavily contribute to methane emissions. New Zealand's Meat & Wool group has estimated the the tax would make 80 percent of sheep and beef farms uneconomical. The article also discusses scientific efforts to reduce the methane naturally produced by the animals. General information is provided on the reduction of emissions in developing countries as well.
