ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the change from import-substitution schemes to open market-oriented model of the agrarian production structure in Costa Rica. The competitiveness of new activities certainly increased. In this context, two types of producers are distinguished which include a traditional peasant sector and an important group of semi-commercial farmers that produce both traditional crops. Moreover, this initiative brought both opportunities and threats to the agricultural sector of the country.
