The article discusses the artistic modernisms of Asia, Africa, Latin America and Australia, which are regarded as derivative of the Western avant-garde. It is explained that the art's universal canon subsumes either the classical canon or the modernist canon that supplanted it in the 20th century. Another explanatory tool for understanding the generation of social and cultural meaning within the context of colonial art is offered.
