ABSTRACT
This article discusses the development of refineries intended to develop ethanol biofuels for commercial use. Support for these industrial projects from the U.S. Dept of Energy (DOE) under the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act is assessed. The administration of grants to Range Fuels Inc. for an ethanol gasification plant, Bluefire Ethanol Fuels Inc. for an acid hydrolysis plant, and enzymatic hydrolysis plants operated by Poet LLC and Abengoa Bioenergy Corp. is described. The production of ethanol at these plants, measured in the tens of millions of gallons per year, is assessed. The withdrawal of Alico and Iogen from the DOE grantmaking process is noted. INSET: THE DROPOUTS: ALICO AND IOGEN.
