ABSTRACT
The article reports on the opening of a museum at Wellington Quarry in France. The museum features a network of tunnels dug by miners from New Zealand in 1916. The predominantly Maori miners carved out elaborate living quarters for more than 20,000 men, but also filled longer passages with explosives, detonating them beneath German positions. The Allies used the tunnels to launch a surprise offensive on April 9, 1917. The visitor center lies at 130 feet, and a glass elevator descends a further 70 feet for guided tours of the tunnels.
