The article provides an overview of the geotourism movement, which was founded by Jonathan Tourtellot. Tourtellot defines the term as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place which includes its culture, environment, heritage, and well-being of its residents. Tourtellot has ranked a compiled list of travel destinations based on its geotourism with help from experts in different fields for the journal "National Geographic Traveler," where he is geotourism editor. The author recounts his travels to Santiago, Chile, where Tourtellot has given a lecture to the Society of American Travel Writers' Conference.
