ABSTRACT
Particle-in-cell simulations and analytic theory are applied to the study of the electron outflow jet in collisionless magnetic reconnection. In these jets, which have also been identified in spacecraft observations, electron flow speeds in thin layers exceed the E×B drift, suggesting that electrons are unmagnetized. In this study, we find the surprising result that the electron flow jets can be explained by a combination of E×B drifts and of diamagnetic effects through the combination of the gradients of particle pressure and of the magnetic field. In a suitably rotated coordinate system, the electron motion is readily decomposed into E×B drift and the motion to support the required current density, consistent with electron gyrotropy. This process appears to be nondissipative.

Fast collisionless magnetic reconnection is driven and observed in a toroidal magnetic cusp. For low values of the toroidal (guide) magnetic field, reconnection occurs without the formation of a macroscopic current channel. In the absence of a current channel, the measured plasma potential and...

We discuss an inclusive analysis strategy for SUSY searches in pp collisions at √s = 14 TeV with the CMS detector, where the missing transverse energy plus multijets canonical signature is used. Emphasis is put on methods to normalize the backgrounds using the data and on understanding the...

Here, we present an implementation of the moving Preisach model to describe the magnetic behaviour of Sm-Co films. We use two independent Preisach distributions to separate the magnetization into reversible and irreversible components. The numerical simulation works very well for a system where...

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has observed a large enhancement of baryon and anti-baryon production at $\approx$ 2-5 GeV/ c, compared to expectations from jet fragmentation. While a number of theoretical interpretations of the data are available, there is not yet a definitive answer to the...
