This article discusses the role of application service providers (ASP) in providing information technology solution for small financial planning firms. The ASP runs the program on its computers; you pay a subscription fee that's usually determined by how much people use the service. The concept isn't new, In the old days of mainframes and remote terminals, computer service bureaus used the same model. But instead of using a dedicated terminal to access the software and data, ASP-users access the service over the Web. Before signing up with an ASP, ask about its internal security measures. The number of ASPs providing general business services continues to grow rapidly. The AdvisorMart is an online back-office portfolio management ASP from Techfi Corp. in Denver, developers of the Portfolio. Advisors who sign up for the service also can arrange for AdvisorMart to generate, print and mail color client reports on the advisor's letterhead. Techfi charges advisors an annual fee of $50 per account; mailings are extra.
