To Consumers, Reliability Is the True Measure of Quality

Assembly;Nov2008, Vol. 51 Issue 12, p10
The article explores ways to ensure reliability of a product. One way to ensure reliability is to derate all parts of an assembly for stresses such as temperature, vibration and voltage. The first line of defense in product reliability is destructive physical analysis. The second is field escape control, which refers to a system for examining assemblies that fail functional testing at the end of the line.

Two-sided assembly line balancing (ALB) problems usually occur in plants which are producing large-sized high-volume products, such as buses, trucks, and domestic products. Many algorithms and heuristics have been proposed to balance the well known classical one-sided assembly lines. However,...

The article discusses the significance of the injected metal assembly (IMA) application to the costs of the industrial manufacturing. It states that the IMA process can outperform most adhesives for small component joining and assembly production while reducing manufacturing costs. It mentions...

Failure and repair data are urgently needed for reliability and maintainability analysis of production lines. A piston production line is traced, and field failure data during a period of 15 months are collected. The statistical analysis of the failure and repair data and the determination of...

We consider the assembly of a product that needs to exceed a certain length. The subassemblies are manufactured with a planned length setting. The resulting lengths of the subassemblies are not known with certainty, and vary about the planned setting. After the subassemblies are manufactured,...

Assembly line balancing problems (ALBP) arise whenever an assembly line is configured, redesigned or adjusted. An ALBP consists of distributing the total workload for manufacturing any unit of the products to be assembled among the work stations along the line. The sequence-dependent assembly...
