ABSTRACT
The article provides an overview of the theory behind cervical screening. Cervical screening, by means of a cervical cytology sample, is undertaken to detect early precancerous changes in cervical cells, which, if left untreated, could progress to cervical cancer. Most cervical screening takes place in general practice and is performed by a doctor or a practice nurse. Cervical screening is an intimate procedure, and ensuring the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible is vital.
