The article focuses on Maudie White Hopkins, the last publicly known widow of a Confederate soldier William M. Cantrell in Arkansas. Hopkins died in August 2008 at the age of 93. She married Cantrell in 1934 at the age of 19 while Cantrell was 86 years old. She was offered by Cantrell to bequeath her his land and home if she would care for him in his twilight years. She agreed to the arrangement after discussing the matter with her large family. He died three years after falling from a mule.
