ABSTRACT
This research paper presents a method developed for modeling and analyzing sealing ring cavitation in centrifugal pumps handling water as well as oil. The paper aims at theoretical formulation for sealing ring cavitation and analysis by simulation using data obtained from a typical centrifugal pump. Due to the leakage through the sealing ring clearance, if the pressure at the clearance reduces to vapour pressure of the fluid, sealing ring cavitation will occur. The theoretical method along with software model developed enable the study of influence of sealing ring dimensions on sealing ring cavitation. The pump performance test results and its standard clearance for the sealing ring are used to simulate the formulation. On the basis of this, the occurrence of cavitation is being predicted for different dimensions of the sealing ring of the pump. The results present the effect of change of sealing ring dimensions on sealing ring cavitation with water and diesel oil. The theoretical formulation developed is validated by using a venturi cavitation experimental set up. The phenomena of cavitation damages the sealing ring which results a fall in performance of the pump. However this research work lead to the prediction of sealing ring cavitation in centrifugal pumps with any fluid enabling the replacement of sealing ring before affecting cavitation damage.
