ABSTRACT
The article reports on the decline in the For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) in August 2008. The index has declined by 1.6 percent during the month which is the largest month-to-month drop since March of 2008. Bob Costello, ATA chief economist, attributed the decline to the slowdown in freight in July 2008 and to the expected slowdown in U.S. economic activity in August 2008. Costello expects trucking to improve before the overall U.S. economy.
