ABSTRACT
The article reports on the increasing intensity rates of the chemical industry's research and development (R&D) activities in the U.S. Kevin Swift, American Chemistry Council's (ACC) chief economist, states that the chemical industry's R&D spending totaled $27.33 billion in 2007, increasing by 67 percent compared with the 1997 levels. R&D's key technologies include bio-based processes, novel catalysts, sustainable chemistry, smart materials, and advanced composites.
