ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the need for physicians to retrieve their Medicare Provider Transaction Access Number by physicians for communications with the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) prior to March 1, 2009. The formerly retired numbers are needed from physicians when making telephone inquiries to customer service or interactive voice response system of the CMS. They will also be required to give their National Provider Identifier and the last five digits of their tax identification number.
