ABSTRACT
The article reports on the legislation proposed by the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush to authorize the secretary of the Treasury to purchase up to $700 billion of non-performing, hard to value real estate and mortgage related assets and securities from financial institutions. The legislation aims to strengthen the financial position of such institutions and allow for additional liquidity in the financial system. In addition, the Treasury has indicated its initiation of guaranty for certain money market funds on a temporary basis.
