ABSTRACT
Osmotic Distillation promises to become an attractive to other athermal or low temperature separation techniques such as Ultra filtration, Reverse Osmosis, pervaporation and vacuum freeze drying. It is novel separation technique playing important role in the processing of foods, pharmaceuticals and other products. Diffusion, here, is a major mass transfer operation for OD accompanied by evaporation of vapor Fliquid interface, transport of vapor molecules and condensation respectively. Process fundamentals are studied with membranes transport kinetics and thermodynamics. Theoretical aspect of acoustic field is reviewed with respect to OA (osmotic agent), stirring speed, concentration and temperature on transmembrane flux. The low operating pressure results in lower investment cost for OD, when compared with pressure driven membrane processes.
