Ford Shifting to Fuel-Efficient Transmissions

The article deals with the plan of Ford Motor Co. to increase the number of fuel-efficient six-speed automatic transmissions it installs in its North American automobiles and trucks. The plan is to double the number by the end of 2009. Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president of powertrain operations, compared with four- and five-speed gearboxes, the transmissions provide a 4 to 6 percent increase in fuel economy.
