The article focuses on the decision of Mazda to destroy the automobiles on the ship Cougar Ace, which nearly sank in 2006. The carmaker was worried about getting sued for potential damages sustained by the automobiles when the ship was adrift and listed at a 60-degree angle for several weeks. The city of Portland, Oregon made sure that antifreeze, brake fluid, motor oil and other hazardous fluids were not mishandled.
