ABSTRACT
The article reports on the 34% increase in the second quarter earnings of global construction and mining equipment firm Caterpillar Inc. in 2008. A continued downturn in North America and Western Europe was offset by strong Caterpillar sales in Asia and elsewhere. According to the company, the housing downturn in the U.S. is the worst environment since the 1930s. It added that nonresidential construction during the quarter was affected by the condition of the housing market.
