ABSTRACT
The article presents an exploration into the trafficking of Chinese immigrants into the United States through Canada at the Niagara border in the early 20th century. Details are given outlining the legal structures established in both countries to limit Chinese immigration, the highly organized and networked system of smugglers who worked to evade the legislation, and the dynamic responses of the governments to adapt and enforce the restrictions. Further discussion is given examining the social constructions surrounding the issue, such as racism and the dehumanization and commodification of immigrants in popular opinion.
