ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the school district in Lewiston, Maine. It discusses the large population of Somali refugees in the town and describes the challenges associated with that increase, such as finances and teaching the English language. The Montello Elementary School is examined and comments from teachers, such as Sue Pilote, are included. The director of Lewiston's English language learner (ELL) program, Sue Martin, discusses the role of Somali parents in their children's education and Phil Nadeau, the Assistant City Manager, discusses the employment opportunities for Somali adults.
