ABSTRACT
The article reports on the decision of Caterpillar Inc. to stop the sale of engines to other truck makers in view of its new strategic alliance with Navistar International Corp. to develop, build and sell commercial trucks worldwide as of June 2008. The alliance marks a strategic shift of Caterpillar from a component supplier to a vertically integrated truck builder. Caterpillar also announced that it would invest $1 billion in the next two years to expand the capacity of its 5 Illinois production plants.
