ABSTRACT
The article reports on the decline in nuclear power plant outage duration in the U.S. It states that according to the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), 41 reactors were either completed or undergoing refueling outages at the end of April 2008 and the average duration of these outages was 36.7 days. It mentions that data from the NEI showed that the average refueling outage lasted 104 days in 1990 and that figure shrunk to 40 days in 2007. Chris Vlahoplus, partner with ScottMadden Inc., a general management consulting firm that specializes in the energy industry, says the bar has been raised when it comes to outage duration and efficiency. Aside from the reduction in average refueling outage duration, there is also a reduction in steam generator and reactor head replacement.
