ABSTRACT
The article examines the role played in both political journalism and politics by the video-sharing Web site YouTube. The increase in video created by ordinary citizens via their cellular telephones or video recorders has created an unprecedented degree of transparency in the political campaigning process. Incidents which would have been ignored in past times now receive wide scrutiny via YouTube. For both journalists and politicians, this means the normal give-and-take of a campaign must be seen as being conducted in public view by a wide audience. Many of the videos created by political activists which appear on YouTube are false and/or scurrilous.
