ABSTRACT
The article features English 18th-century portrait painter Henry Pickering. There was no organized school of art in England when Pickering decided to embark on a career as a portrait painter. His artistic training was provided by Hamlet Winstanley who managed a large studio at Knowsley near Liverpool. Among his earliest works are known from engravings, including well-known images that depict the actress Peg Woffington. Pickering also studied with the contemporary masters in Italy which prepared him for the diverse range of sitters he faced upon his return to England.
