ABSTRACT
The article focuses on what appeared to be British portrait and landscape painter Thomas Gainsborough's lost portrait of Italian dancer Marie Jean Augustin Vestris. A portrait of the dancer displayed at an exhibition at Tate Britain in 2001 attributed to Gainsborough's newphew Gainsborough Dupont has been found to be the work of Thomas Gainsborough based on research and conservation efforts. Such a discovery is cited as a reminder that what appeared to be lost masterpieces may not necessarily bee missing, but simply misattributed.
