In a 4x4 diallel crossing experiment without the reciprocals (HVW-247, Partisan, NS-293 and Jap.-15) the mode of inheritance, the gene effect and combining abilities for the spike length and spikelet number per spike in F1 and F2 generations were investigated. Testing of the significance of means in relation to the parental mean was used for the determinations of the mode inheritance. Analysis of variance for combining abilities was made by using the incomplete diallel method (Griffing, 1956). In the hybrids obtained from multi- and two-rowed barleys, an intermediary spike form predominated in the F1 generation, due to the fact that the number of fertile spike-lets in lateral rows ranged from 2-50, and two-rowed spike forms dominated in the F2 generation. The means for the spike length and spikelet number per spike in the F1 and F2 generations were intermediary or approached the parent with a higher spike length or a higher spikelet number per spike. The modes of inheritance of the traits examined were partial dominance, dominance or overdominance, depending on the crossing combination. The analysis of combining abilities showed that the spike length and spikelet number per spike were determined by the genes with additive and non-additive effects. The GCA/SCA ratio in both generations indicated the predominance of additive genes in the inheritance of the traits concerned. The NS-293 cultivar as a parent with the highest mean for both traits and also the best general combiner for spike length and spikelet number can be used as a parent in programmes of breeding multi-rowed barley for increased spike length and spikelet number per spike.
