ABSTRACT
The article discusses Great Britain's gap year industry where college students go overseas on pre-, post-university, or career-break placements as volunteers. According to the article, more stringent regulation and transparency is needed as an increasingly number of travel companies attempt to cash in on this market, bringing fears that the volunteers and their hosts are being exploited by dishonest operators. Statistics on the gap year industry from the report Gaps In Development by the independent charity Tourism Concern are given. Tourism Concern's main goals is to ensure that groups have codes of conduct and projects are suggested by local people rather than by a marketing department.
