ABSTRACT
The article states that the increasing amount of carbon dioxide that plants use does not match by what they return to the atmosphere via microbial respiration. It is stated that microbes recycle nutrients including carbon dioxide which is needed for man's survival on Earth. The author argues whether or not microbial respiration in rivers could be the missing link in the carbon cycle. He says that he wants to measure microbes in water in tropical and temperate forests with assistance from the Smithsonian Institute.
