ABSTRACT
The article investigates changes in the prevalence of self-reported secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure at home and changes in any exposure, as measured by serum cotinine in nonsmoking children, adolescents and adults. The findings showed that self-reported SHS exposure at home and SHS exposure as measured by serum cotinine fell significantly in the U.S. population from 1988-1994 to 1999-2004. During 1988-1994, the percentage of nonsmokers with detectable serum cotinine was uniformly high for all age groups.
