The article reports on the adoption of the so-called lean methods pioneered by Toyota by hospital chief executive officers in the U.S. The carmaker works with health care providers in communities where it has plants, sending process engineers to observe staff operations and recommend efficiencies. Toyota's process engineers recently helped a Kentucky hospital improve its emergency department. The hospital wanted to reduce throughput, the time that patients were in the emergency department before discharge or admittance to the hospital, to two hours.
