Thyroid hormone: multiple effects on cholesterol synthesis and metabolism

The article reports that treatment with thyroid hormone has multiple effects on cholesterol synthesis and metabolism, according to Elizabeth N. Pearce, assistant professor of medicine, section of endocrinology, diabetes and nutrition, Boston University School of Medicine in Massachusetts. Pearce said that levothyroxine decreases total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in patients with overt hypothyroidism. Risk markers, namely, oxidized LDL and apolipoprotein, are discussed.
