This article focuses on the work of artist Cherry Partee. Her legacy as a conceptual artist includes Dada, as well as the various movements of the 1960s and 1970s that rejected philosopher Immanuel Kant's disinterested aesthetics and modernism's autonomous art object and empowered the artist as a culturally active agent. Domestic tradition is the origin of Partee's interest in quiltmaking. Her most striking innovations include installations and performances that utilize quilts to question cultural assumptions. For instance, The Gift refers to a cut up quilt that lies next to a white box wrapped with pink ribbon and smudged with hand prints. Issues of art's presentation and reception re-emerged in Partee's The Rain Falls on the Just and Unjust.
