ABSTRACT
The article looks at Nikias Luhmann's early work in the decade from the middle of the 1960's until the middle of the 1970's. It tries to reconstruct the development of Lehman's ideas referring to ›social differentiation‹. The subject is on the one hand, starting with "Grundrechte als Institution" (1965), the functional differentiation of society. It is on the other hand the differentiation of levels, i.e. Lehman's distinction between ›interaction, organization, and society; the starting point here is "Function und Folgen formaler Organisation" (1964).

Richard Münch has developed a theory of differentiation and integration for modern societies which differs fundamentally from that of Niklas Luhmann. While the latter is drawing a picture of a society highly divided in partial systems with their own logics, for Münch today these systems...

Everybody seems to agree that the church has less cultural influence than formerly in modern society. A differentiated analysis with reference to Niklas Luhmann shows however that this is a one-sided perspective because the functionally differentiated society of today has not only disadvantages,...

There is an ambiguity in Luhmann's view of religion, which states on the one hand that religion is an affirmative way of dealing with contingency and freedom and on the other that religion is an old-fashioned system, since it postulates necessity in a modem world where things are always subject...

This article argues that although the notion of conflict barely features both in Luhmannian as well as in other theories of world society, most of those theories indeed have something to say about the dynamics and sources of conflicts in world society, if only implicitly so. The article first...

This essay addresses the concept of norms and the connection between norms, social structure and politics in the works of Niklas Luhmann. Two theses are put forward in this regard. First, it is argued that, in its political implications, Luhmann's theory of society has a clear normative - or...

In order to avoid a one-sided (either theoretical or political) interpretation of Luhmann's complex theory, it should be discussed both as a theory and in connection with its political implications and perspectives (1.). Luhmann's concept of functional differentiation is shown to act as a...

This article argues, first, that the works of Niklas Luhmann have not yet been fully assimilated into political theory, and that political theory which wishes to remain adequate to the conceptual evolution of the contemporary social sciences should allow itself to be challenged by the paradigm...
