ABSTRACT
The article discusses Benjamin Franklin's founding of the "Library Company of Philadelphia" (LCP) in 1731 and the subsequent creation of the oldest subscription library in America, with a collection mostly devoted initially to travel, geographic, historical, and natural history books. The role of the library in the Continental Congress and Declaration of Independence is traced. The state of the contemporary library is discussed.
