The article discusses African print textiles, also known as chitenge or kitenge cloths. According to the article, African women have been wearing these colorful cotton prints since the late 19th century and the industry can be traced to the mid 19th century and the European manufacture of wax-resist cloths, based on the Asian craft of batik. Popular designs include those based on the alphabet, symbols of empowerment such as hands and fingers, and a hand containing 12 coins bordered by fingers, symbolizing wealth.
