The article describes the extensive municipal library system in Toronto, Canada and emphasizes its special holdings of interest to immigrants, many of them from Germany. A brief history of the city and its settlement by Seneca Indians and later French trappers and English colonists is presented. The first library's founding in 1882 has resulted in the largest communal library in America.
